USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins refuted claims that a New World screwworm case was detected just one mile from the Texas border, confirming the nearest verified case was found in a 5-year old goat 25 miles away in the Mexican state of Coahuila. She emphasized that no cases have been reported in the United States.
The rumor began after Texas State Representative Don McLaughlin posted online that the parasitic fly had been found a mile from the border. Rollins said such misinformation creates unnecessary concern among farmers and ranchers.
